About the Down Syndrome Society of Mobile

Our Story
The Down Syndrome Society of Mobile was officially incorporated March 31, 1981 by William and Debbie Heath, Rebecca Cox, Diane Sears, and Patrick Avinger. The incorporated name was “Association for Down Syndrome Citizens”.

In 2007 the association applied for the 501(c)3 tax exempt status and changed the name of the organization to “Down Syndrome Society of Mobile County” to reflect ties to where most of the participating members lived. In 2015 the organization changed to “Down Syndrome Society of Mobile” to better show its relationship with  members across the Mobile area, including Baldwin County.

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide enrichment through education, networking opportunities, advocacy, and emotional support for individuals with Down Syndrome, their families and the greater community.
