Buddy Walk®
The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) as an event to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The first Buddy Walk in Mobile was held in 2007.
Annual Christmas Party
A day of holiday-themed fun for Mobile-area children and adults with Down syndrome, as well as their immediate families, held each December. The highlight of the party is visiting with Santa Claus, who makes a special trip to Mobile just for the party!
Rock Your Socks/World Down Syndrome Day
Each year, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day (March 21), we encourage our local community to join us in "Rockin' Our Socks" to support Down syndrome awareness. Recognized by the United Nations, World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on the 21st day of the third month of the year, which is symbolic of the third copy of the 21st chromosome that characterizes Down syndrome. Internationally, the day is celebrated by wearing brightly colored and/or mismatched socks so that the wearer can then explain the significance of the socks, and also, of World Down Syndrome Day, to those who ask.
Awareness and FUN!
To raise awareness of our organization and of Down syndrome, we set up an information table at a number of local events. Our members also participate in a variety of fun events each year, along with others with special needs in the Mobile area. These include the Conde Cavaliers Mardi Gras Fishing Rodeo, the Mobile Challenged Revelers Mardi Gras Parade, dance classes, summer camps and much, much more!
